Berlin

Situated in Prenzlauer Berg this apartment was a collaborative renovation between Anna and her partner.

Anna and her family relocated from London to Berlin in 2021. With the renovation starting during the 2020 pandemic, Anna designed remotely, whilst her German partner was based on site to actualise plans. The home houses some of Anna’s artwork, paintings and furniture. You can see her signature use of black and white throughout, and a colour palette intended to sit well within the local environment. Inspired by the colours you often see painted on the front of houses in the city streets, plaster pink, soft muted greens, greys and chalky blue were introduced to the interiors.

The project began with reconfiguring the positioning of the rooms. The wall previously dividing the two front rooms was removed to create space and bring in more light. Lowered ceilings were removed, an extra bathroom added, and the kitchen relocated from the middle of the apartment, to the front.

The kitchen and fitted furniture were designed by Anna and her friend, a designer who she once worked with at Smallbone of Devises. One of the main challenges was finding a carpenter to make bespoke cabinetry. Unlike London there is less of a history of renovation in Berlin, and tradespeople who work to custom designs are harder to find. Covid travel restrictions and building supply delays contributed to the difficulties of completing the project ahead of moving in.
